Our design looked to address physical, visual and spiritual elements to enable us to create a space that is culturally relevant and respectful to our First Nation’s Peoples. We collaborated with an indigenous design consultant to integrate Aboriginal design elements throughout the public spaces & importantly, for the design of a Koori Hearing Room. This unique Hearing Room supports the Koori Engagement Program that aims to improve Aboriginal access and participation at VCAT.

Venko placed emphasis on creating a courts facility that is inclusive to the breadth of people who use it. The community-based courts facility significantly expands VCATs capacity to provide accessible dispute resolution to the Victorian community in the northern metropolitan region.

The project represents a new way of working for VCAT and the intention is that the design is innovative and adaptive to the new working practices of the organisation. The experience of attendants is afforded greater sensitivity through the integration of latest technology to enable people to engage remotely in a safe and comfortable way with the tribunal.
